If you don’t already know – I LOVE workout videos. And Jillian Michaels was my gateway drug. But it’s physically impossible for me to do a Jillian workout every day, and I like to mix it up. So I was thrilled when I discovered the Active by POPSUGAR app. I’ve been mixing in these workouts for years, love them, and never get bored.
ACTIVE BY POPSUGAR – An intro to the app
Active by POPSUGAR is a free mobile app with 100s of different workout videos – cardio, HIIT, yoga, pilates, kickboxing, treadmill, dance…the list goes on and on.
Each workout is led by a different instructor who is a pro at a specific type of workout. For example, Allie Cohen from Barry’s Bootcamp leads bootcamp workouts and Mandy Ingber, creator of Yogalosophy, leads you through vinyasas. Other guest instructors include celebrity trainers Simone De La Rue (Reese Witherspoon, Taylor Swift), David Kirsch (J.Lo), and Kim Glass (Demi Lovato) who work you out just like they do their VIP clients. I may not look like or ever look like J.Lo, but it’s nice to pretend there’s a chance when I work out with her trainer.
With all the different workouts, the Active app keeps my daily workouts fun and challenging. I never get bored!
TIME TO GET ACTIVE
The Download & Setup
Once you download the app, it will ask you if you want to register with Facebook or your email. If you set up an account, you can save your favorite workouts and see your workout history. However, you can skip the account setup process and just use the app as a guest.
Find your workout
You can discover new workouts on the first tab “Latest.” Somedays when I’m not feeling like working out, when I find a new workout on this tab, it turns my dread into excitement. They usually add a new workout each week, and the newest one is at the top of the scroll.
If you want to do a specific type of workout – strength (with weights or bodyweight), cardio, yoga – you can tap on the header bar to find the type of workout that you’re seeking.
My favorite feature in the app is Filter +. You can search within each of the workout categories to find the workout that you’re up for that day. You can filter by body part, level of difficulty, duration (number of minutes), and or type (video or guide).
So if you’re about to wear a sleeveless top or dress and need to tone your arms, you can filter for and find videos that focus on arms. If you are just getting started or had a tough workout the day before, you can search for beginner (easier) workouts. If your time is limited and you want to squeeze in a workout, you can search for say a 15 minute video.
You can filter by one, two, or all of the subcategories to find your ideal workout.
Time to Sweat
Once you’ve found your workout, just select it and hit play. So no excuses – enjoy the burn!! Especially from the comfort of your own home, hotel room, etc. And for free!
My favorite workouts
Here are some of my favorite videos. You can find them by searching in the app with the magnifying glass in the top right corner of the header bar. I’ve marked the ones that don’t require any equipment with an */

Many workouts don’t require equipment. You can just put on your workout clothes, hit play, and go.
If you want to do weight bearing exercise or increase intensity, I would recommend the following pieces of equipment for home workouts, especially workout videos.
- Yoga Mat (for floor exercises – ab work, stretching)
- A set of hand weights based on your fitness level. If you’re just getting started or just want one set, a set of 5-lb hand weights is perfect for most videos. If you want to add more, I’d recommend a set of 2- to 3-lb weights for cardio pilates videos and a set of 8- to 10-lb weights for arms and leg exercises.
For most workouts, you only need a mat and a weight or two. Over time, I’ve added additional equipment. If you are up for more, I’d recommend one resistance band (or a set of) – I like and have these and a foam roller.
DID YOU TRY IT? WHAT DO YOU THINK?
I’d love to hear if you try the app and if you have favorite trainers or videos. Or if you have a fitness app that you love and recommend, please share! I’m always up for trying new things.
